How the Decanter Centrifuge Works
1. Polishing Slurry Feeding
Glass polishing slurry enters the rotating bowl through a controlled feed pipe.
An agitated slurry tank is normally recommended upstream to prevent solids settling and maintain stable feed concentration.
2. Centrifugal Sedimentation
Inside the high-speed rotating bowl, centrifugal force separates polishing powder and glass fines from the liquid phase.
The heavier fine solids settle against the bowl wall, while clarified liquid remains closer to the center.
3. Continuous Solids Conveying
The internal screw conveyor rotates at a controlled differential speed relative to the bowl.
This movement transports settled polishing solids toward the conical end for continuous discharge.
4. Clarified Liquid Discharge
The separated liquid leaves through the liquid outlet.
It can be returned to the polishing-water circulation system, transferred to a recycle-water tank, or sent to further clarification and wastewater treatment.
5. Thickened Polishing Solids Discharge
The concentrated polishing powder, glass fines, and sludge are discharged continuously from the solids outlet.
Recovered solids can be sent to a filter press, dryer, polishing-powder recovery system, storage tank, or disposal section.

Polishing Powder Type
Different polishing materials such as cerium oxide, alumina, silica, or mixed glass fines have different density, particle size, and settling behavior.
Fine Particle Recovery
Very fine polishing powder may remain suspended in water. Slurry testing is recommended when high recovery or strict clarified-water quality is required.
Slurry Concentration and Viscosity
High solids concentration or high viscosity may reduce separation capacity. Stable feeding helps maintain consistent operation.
Abrasion Level
Glass fines and polishing media can cause wear. Wear protection should be selected according to particle hardness, solids concentration, and operating hours.
Water Reuse Requirement
If clarified water will be reused directly in polishing, the suspended-solids level, turbidity, pH, conductivity, and residual additives should be checked.
Upstream Screening
Large glass fragments or coarse particles should be removed by screening before entering the decanter centrifuge.
Continuous Polishing Powder Recovery
The decanter continuously recovers fine polishing solids from glass polishing slurry and process water, reducing material loss and wastewater load.
Process-Water Recycle
Clarified liquid can be reused in polishing, rinsing, or slurry preparation after suitable quality checking.
Wear-Resistant Configuration
Glass fines, silica particles, alumina, and cerium oxide can be abrasive. Wear-resistant protection can be added to the scroll, feed zone, bowl cone, and solids discharge area.
Stable Operation for Fine Slurry
Bowl speed, differential speed, pond depth, and feed rate can be adjusted according to particle size, slurry concentration, viscosity, and clarified-water target.
Lower Downstream Load
The centrifuge thickens polishing slurry before filter pressing, drying, recovery, or disposal, reducing liquid volume and improving handling efficiency.

Can a decanter centrifuge recover cerium oxide polishing powder?
Yes. It can recover fine cerium oxide and other polishing solids from glass polishing slurry. Recovery performance depends on particle size, slurry concentration, and clarified-water target.
Can the clarified liquid be reused?
Yes. Clarified liquid can often be returned to polishing-water circulation or process-water storage. Further polishing filtration may be needed for stricter reuse quality.
Is wear protection necessary?
It is recommended when the slurry contains glass fines, silica, alumina, or other abrasive particles.
Can the decanter handle coarse glass particles?
Large glass fragments should be screened out before centrifugation. The decanter is more suitable for fine polishing slurry, suspended solids, and sludge thickening.
Can it replace a filter press?
The decanter is mainly used for continuous thickening and primary dewatering. A filter press or dryer may still be used when lower final moisture is required.
