Product Description
Three Phase Decanter Centrifuge for Crude Oil Sludge Treatment
Three Phase Decanter Centrifuge for Crude Oil Sludge Treatment
Description

The Three Phase Decanter Centrifuge for Crude Oil Sludge Treatment continuously separates recoverable crude oil, water, and concentrated solids from oily sludge.

It is suitable for tank-bottom sludge, oil ponds, refinery lagoons, API separator sludge, and crude-oil storage or cleaning residues. Three-phase decanters separate two immiscible liquids and suspended solids in one continuous process.

Typical Applications
  • Crude-oil pretreatment sludge separation
  • Desalter sludge oil recovery
  • Crude-oil blending residue treatment
  • Refinery oily sludge processing
  • Oil-water separator sludge treatment
  • Crude-oil washing residue separation
  • Off-spec crude mixture recovery
  • Oily sediment concentration
  • Pretreatment before thermal desorption
  • Crude-oil sludge volume reduction

Crude Oil Sludge Challenges

High Viscosity

Heavy hydrocarbons, wax, and asphaltenes may reduce pumpability and separation efficiency. Controlled heating or dilution can improve fluidity before centrifugation.

Stable Emulsions

Fine solids and surface-active compounds may stabilize the oil-water emulsion. Heating, demulsifier dosing, and sufficient mixing time may be required.

Abrasive Solids

Sand, rust, scale, coke, and mineral particles can wear the feed zone, scroll flights, bowl cone, and solids outlets. Carbide, ceramic, or hard-facing protection can be selected.

Variable Feed Composition

Oil, water, and solids ratios may change during tank cleaning or between different sludge sources. Adjustable feed rate, bowl speed, differential speed, and liquid interface help maintain stable operation.

Corrosion and Process Safety

Crude-oil sludge may contain salts, sulfur compounds, chemicals, and flammable hydrocarbons. Wetted materials, seals, ventilation, explosion protection, and optional nitrogen blanketing should match the actual feed conditions.

Crude Oil Sludge Treatment Solution

Peony provides continuous solutions for crude-oil recovery, water separation, solids concentration, and sludge-volume reduction.

Crude Oil Sludge
→ Coarse Screening
→ Heated Agitated Tank
→ Optional Dilution / Demulsifier
→ Three Phase Decanter Centrifuge
→ Recovered Oil + Separated Water + Concentrated Solids

Recovered Oil
→ Oil Tank
→ Reprocessing / Blending / Further Purification

Separated Water
→ API Separator / DAF / Biological Treatment

Concentrated Solids
→ Thermal Treatment / Further Dewatering / Disposal

Three-phase decanter systems are commonly used for oily-sludge treatment because they recover oil while simultaneously separating water and solids.

Peony Can Provide

  • Sludge testing and centrifuge selection
  • Screening and heated feed tank
  • Controlled feed pump
  • Demulsifier dosing system
  • Adjustable bowl and differential speed
  • Adjustable oil-water interface
  • Wear-resistant internal components
  • Gas-tight and explosion-proof design
  • Automatic flushing system
  • PLC and dual-VFD control
  • Three-phase collection system

How the Decanter Centrifuge Works

1. Conditioned Sludge Feeding

Screened and heated crude-oil sludge enters the rotating bowl through a controlled feed pipe.

Agitation maintains a uniform feed, while optional heating and demulsifier dosing improve separation.

2. Solids Sedimentation

Centrifugal force moves sand, rust, scale, and other dense solids toward the bowl wall.

The solids form a concentrated outer layer.

3. Oil-Water Separation

The lighter crude-oil phase remains closer to the bowl center.

The heavier water phase forms a separate outer liquid layer.

4. Continuous Solids Conveying

The screw conveyor transports settled solids toward the conical discharge end.

Concentrated solids discharge continuously through protected outlets.

5. Three-Phase Discharge

Recovered oil and separated water leave through independent liquid outlets.

The concentrated solids are discharged continuously for further treatment or disposal. This is the basic operating principle of a three-phase separating decanter.

Main Advantages

Improved Crude Oil Recovery

Recovers hydrocarbons from sludge and reduces oil loss before disposal or further treatment.

Handling of Heavy Crude Residues

Heating and high-torque conveying support viscous sludge containing wax, asphaltenes, and heavy oil.

Sand and Rust Separation

Wear-protected components handle abrasive sand, scale, rust, and tank sediment.

Stable Separation with Variable Feed

Adjustable bowl speed, differential speed, and phase interface adapt to changing oil, water, and solids ratios.

Lower Downstream Treatment Load

Removing oil and solids reduces the volume sent to thermal treatment, wastewater treatment, or hazardous-waste disposal.

What Data Is Needed for Selection?

Please provide:

  • Oil, water, and solids percentages
  • Temperature and viscosity
  • Particle size and solids type
  • Required processing capacity

  • Safety and downstream requirements

FAQ

Is heating required for crude-oil sludge?

It is commonly recommended for waxy or high-viscosity sludge. The required temperature depends on the crude-oil properties and plant safety limits.

Can the centrifuge process tank-bottom sand and rust?

Yes, after coarse foreign materials are removed. Wear-resistant protection is recommended for highly abrasive feeds.

Can it separate stable crude-oil emulsions?

Stable emulsions may require heating, demulsifier dosing, dilution, and controlled mixing before centrifugation.

Can recovered oil return directly to storage?

Not automatically. Water, sediment, salt, and contaminant levels should be tested before blending or reprocessing.

Can separated water go directly to discharge?

Usually not. Residual oil, suspended solids, COD, salts, and chemicals may require further oily-water treatment.
