The Bag Lifting Centrifuge is designed for batch solid-liquid separation of filterable biopharma product solids after precipitation, crystallization, purification, or downstream processing.
In biopharma production, the separated material may include crystallized intermediates, precipitated product solids, purified active ingredient intermediates, fermentation-derived solids, or other valuable filter cakes requiring controlled washing and dewatering before further processing.
It is suitable for batch processes where complete product recovery, gentle handling, reduced cross-contamination risk, and hygienic product contact design are important.
- Crystallized pharmaceutical intermediate recovery
- Precipitated biopharma product separation
- Batch solid-liquid separation after downstream purification
- Filterable fermentation-derived product recovery
- API intermediate cake washing and dewatering
- Nutraceutical and biological active ingredient recovery
- Enzyme-related product solids after precipitation
- Fine chemical and pharmaceutical-grade crystal handling
- Product cake recovery before vacuum drying or tray drying
- Batch purification systems requiring removable filter bags
Biopharma product recovery often requires more than basic filtration. The separation stage must control product loss, wash quality, cake moisture, and cleaning between campaigns.
Typical requirements include:
- Recovery of valuable solid product with low hold-up
- Controlled removal of mother liquor or process liquid
- Batch washing to reduce residual salts or soluble impurities
- Reduced manual scraping inside the basket
- Gentle product handling during cake discharge
- Easier cleaning between product campaigns
- Hygienic product-contact materials
- Repeatable batch operation and traceable process control
- Flexible configuration for different product grades and batch sizes
The Bag Lifting Centrifuge supports these requirements through controlled centrifugal filtration, optional cake washing, spin drying, and removable bag-lifting discharge.
Peony provides centrifuge equipment and separation support for batch filtration, product cake washing, dewatering, and controlled discharge in biopharma downstream processing.
Process Evaluation
Our engineers evaluate:
- Product solid type and cake-forming behavior
- Particle size and filtration performance
- Slurry solids concentration and liquid properties
- Product purity and washing requirement
- Target moisture and downstream drying conditions
Equipment Selection
We help customers select:
- Suitable basket size and batch capacity
- Filter bag material and micron rating
- Filter screen and feed configuration
- Cake washing and spin-drying arrangement
- Bag lifting discharge system
- Product-contact material, surface finish, CIP option, and PLC automation level
The prepared product slurry enters the rotating basket lined with a filter bag and supporting filter screen.
Under centrifugal force:
- Process liquid passes through the filter bag and is collected through the filtrate outlet.
- Product solids are retained inside the basket.
- A filter cake gradually forms on the inner surface of the filter bag.
- Optional wash liquid is introduced to reduce residual mother liquor, soluble salts, or other process impurities.
- High-speed rotation removes residual moisture from the product cake.
- The machine stops after the programmed separation cycle is completed.
- The filter bag containing the dewatered cake is lifted through the top discharge section.
- The recovered product is collected or transferred to downstream drying, milling, screening, packaging, or further purification equipment.
The complete batch cycle can be controlled through PLC operation to maintain stable filtration, repeatable washing performance, and consistent product handling.

Controlled Batch Separation
The centrifuge performs feeding, filtration, cake washing, spin drying, stopping, and bag lifting in a defined batch sequence. This supports repeatable separation performance for biopharma processes requiring controlled batch operation.
Low Product Hold-Up
The filter bag retains the solid cake during filtration and is lifted after the cycle is completed. This helps reduce residual material left inside the basket and supports more complete product recovery from each batch.
Controlled Cake Washing
Optional washing can be introduced after filtration to displace residual process liquid, mother liquor, soluble salts, or other impurities from the cake. Wash flow, duration, and sequence can be adjusted according to product purity requirements.
Contained Product Cake Handling
The dewatered cake is removed together with the filter bag through the top discharge section. This provides a more controlled product collection method than direct manual scraping inside the basket.
Cleaner Campaign Changeover
The removable filter bag helps simplify product removal, cleaning, and replacement between batches. This is useful for multiproduct biopharma facilities where campaign changeover and cross-contamination control are important.
Hygienic Product-Contact Design
The centrifuge can be configured with SS316L product-contact parts, sanitary seals, polished internal surfaces, spray-ball cleaning, and CIP options according to the required process and cleaning standard.
For biopharma applications, the equipment configuration should be selected according to the required product grade, cleaning procedure, containment level, and validation requirements.
| Component | Typical Configuration |
|---|---|
| Product-contact parts | SS316L stainless steel |
| Basket and casing | Polished stainless steel construction |
| Filter bag | Pharmaceutical-grade or chemical-compatible filter media |
| Seals and gaskets | Silicone, EPDM, PTFE, FKM, or customized sanitary materials |
| Surface finish | Selected according to cleanability and product requirement |
| Cleaning system | Manual cleaning, spray-ball cleaning, or CIP configuration |
| Product discharge | Open, semi-closed, or contained bag-lifting arrangement |
| Optional configuration | Nitrogen protection, load cells, explosion-proof motor, or customized PLC control |
For GMP-oriented or high-purity applications, the final design should confirm surface finish, material certificates, filter bag specification, cleanability, CIP procedure, containment requirement, and documentation scope.

Is the Bag Lifting Centrifuge suitable for biopharma solids?
Yes. It is suitable for filterable biopharma product solids formed after precipitation, crystallization, or downstream purification, especially when batch washing, dewatering, and controlled cake collection are required.
Can the centrifuge process raw fermentation broth directly?
It is generally not recommended for raw broth with high cell density, fine biomass, mycelium, or gel-like biological solids. The equipment is more suitable after clarification or product precipitation has created a filterable cake-forming slurry.
Can the product cake be washed?
Yes. An optional washing system can be integrated to reduce residual mother liquor, salts, and soluble impurities. Wash conditions should be selected according to product solubility and purity targets.
Can the machine be configured for high-purity applications?
Yes. SS316L contact parts, polished surfaces, sanitary seals, suitable filter bags, CIP options, and contained handling arrangements can be configured based on project requirements.
Can mother liquor or process liquid be recovered?
Yes. The filtrate can be collected for recovery, recycle, further processing, or disposal according to the process design.
