How the Decanter Centrifuge Works

1. Iron Ore Slurry Feeding

Iron ore slurry enters the rotating bowl through a controlled feed pipe.

An agitated slurry tank is normally recommended upstream to prevent settling and maintain stable feed concentration.

2. Centrifugal Sedimentation

Inside the high-speed rotating bowl, centrifugal force separates iron ore fines, clay, mud, and mineral solids from the liquid phase.

The heavier particles settle against the bowl wall, while clarified liquid remains closer to the center.

3. Continuous Solids Conveying

The internal screw conveyor rotates at a controlled differential speed relative to the bowl.

This movement transports settled iron ore solids toward the conical end for continuous discharge.

4. Clarified Liquid Discharge

The separated liquid leaves through the liquid outlet.

It can be returned to grinding, washing, classification, process-water recycle, or further wastewater treatment.

5. Thickened Iron Ore Solids Discharge

The concentrated iron ore fines and mineral solids are discharged continuously from the solids outlet.

Recovered solids can be transferred to a filter press, belt filter, dryer, stockpile, tailings system, or further mineral processing stage.

Key Selection Considerations

Particle Size and Fine Content

Fine iron ore particles, clay, and ultrafine mineral solids affect recovery rate, clarified-water quality, and throughput.

Abrasion Condition

Iron ore slurry can be highly abrasive. Wear protection should be selected according to particle hardness, solids concentration, and operating time.

Slurry Solids Concentration

Feed concentration may change during grinding, classification, or tailings treatment. A buffer tank and controlled feed pump help maintain stable separation.

Flocculant Compatibility

Flocculant may improve fine-particle capture and liquid clarity. Slurry testing is recommended before confirming dosing type and dosage.

Clarified Water Requirement

If clarified liquid will be reused directly in the process, the required suspended-solids level should be confirmed.

Downstream Dewatering

The decanter is mainly used for continuous thickening and primary dewatering. If lower final moisture is required, it can be combined with a filter press, belt filter, vacuum filter, or dryer.

Main Advantages

Continuous Iron Ore Fines Recovery

The decanter continuously recovers iron ore fines from slurry, washing water, and tailings water, helping reduce solid loss and improve process-water reuse.

Wear-Resistant Configuration

Iron ore slurry is abrasive and may contain quartz, sand, clay, and hard mineral particles. Wear protection can be added to the scroll, feed zone, bowl cone, and solids discharge area.

Stable Operation for Variable Feed

Bowl speed, differential speed, pond depth, and feed rate can be adjusted according to slurry concentration, particle size, viscosity, and required throughput.

Process-Water Recycle

Clarified liquid can be returned to the grinding, washing, or classification circuit, helping reduce fresh-water consumption and wastewater load.

Lower Downstream Load

The centrifuge thickens slurry before filter pressing or drying, reducing liquid volume and improving downstream handling efficiency.

FAQ

Can a decanter centrifuge recover iron ore fines?

Yes. It can continuously recover iron ore fines from slurry, washing water, classification overflow, and tailings water. Recovery performance depends on particle size, slurry concentration, and clarified-water target.

Is wear protection necessary?

Usually yes. Iron ore slurry is abrasive, especially when it contains quartz, sand, or hard mineral particles.

Can clarified water be reused?

Yes. Clarified liquid can often be returned to grinding, washing, or classification. Further treatment may be added if stricter water quality is required.

Can the decanter replace a filter press?

The decanter is mainly used for continuous thickening and primary dewatering. A filter press, belt filter, or dryer may still be needed for lower final moisture.

Is flocculant dosing required?

Not always. It depends on fine-particle content, settling behavior, recovery target, and clarified-water requirement.
